About GetInvoice

Free, simple, and built for UK sole traders and small businesses.

GetInvoice is a free browser-based invoice generator built specifically for the United Kingdom. Whether you're a freelancer, sole trader, contractor, or small limited company, you can create a professional, HMRC-compliant PDF invoice in under a minute — no account required, no data stored on our servers.

Everything runs entirely in your browser. Your invoice data never leaves your device — we don't store, log, or transmit any of the information you enter.

What makes an invoice UK-compliant?

HMRC requires that invoices issued by UK businesses include specific information. GetInvoice prompts you for all of it:

  • A unique, sequential invoice number
  • Your business name and address
  • The client's name and address
  • The invoice date and supply date
  • A clear description of the goods or services supplied
  • The total amount excluding VAT (if applicable)
  • The VAT rate and amount charged (if VAT-registered)
  • Your VAT registration number (if VAT-registered)

If you operate under the VAT threshold (currently £90,000 annual turnover), you are not required to charge VAT — simply leave the VAT fields blank.

VAT invoices

If you are VAT-registered, your invoices must show your VAT registration number (in the format GB123456789), the VAT rate applied to each line item, the net amount, the VAT amount, and the gross total. GetInvoice handles all of this automatically.

For cross-border B2B supplies where the reverse charge applies, GetInvoice adds the required statutory notice to your invoice.

Credit notes

GetInvoice also generates UK-compliant credit notes. A credit note is used to cancel or reduce a previously issued invoice — for example, if goods were returned or a billing error was made. Tick the "This is a credit note" box in the document type section, and the document will switch to a credit note format, referencing the original invoice number and showing the appropriate wording.

Late payment legislation

Under the Late Payment of Commercial Debts (Interest) Act 1998, UK businesses are entitled to charge interest on overdue invoices. The statutory rate is 8% above the Bank of England base rate. GetInvoice lets you include this notice on every invoice.

Who built this?

GetInvoice was built as a free public tool for UK freelancers and small business owners who need a quick, reliable way to produce professional invoices and credit notes without subscribing to accounting software. If you find it useful, please share it.

GetInvoice does not collect, store, or transmit any personal data you enter into the invoice form. All processing happens locally in your browser.

1. Who we are

GetInvoice ("we", "us", "our") operates the website at this domain. We are committed to protecting your privacy in accordance with the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018.

2. What data we collect

GetInvoice is a client-side tool. When you use the invoice generator:

  • All data you enter (business names, addresses, invoice figures, etc.) is processed entirely within your browser.
  • No invoice data is transmitted to our servers.
  • Your business details (name, address, VAT number, bank details) are automatically saved to your browser's localStorage so they are restored on your next visit. This data never leaves your device.
  • Invoice-specific data (invoice number, client details, line items) is not saved between sessions — each invoice starts fresh.
  • You can clear all locally saved data at any time using the "Clear all saved data" button in the tool.

We do not require you to create an account or provide any personal information to use the tool.

For users in the UK and EEA, Google's use of advertising cookies is governed by Google's Privacy Policy. You may manage your cookie preferences at any time.

4. Cookies

GetInvoice itself does not set any cookies. Third-party services (Google AdSense, Google Analytics) may set cookies on your device. These are governed by Google's own privacy policy.

You can control cookie settings through your browser settings or through the ICO's guidance at ico.org.uk.

This site may contain links to external websites (e.g. GOV.UK). We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those sites and encourage you to review their privacy policies.

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The date at the top of this page will reflect the most recent revision. Continued use of GetInvoice after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
